The Art Jock, MoMA, July 27, 2007.
Some things that happened this week:
- Got ass kicked at BJJ (surprise). Went through few long practices getting my ass kicked, and feeling that my initial learning curve is starting to flatten into a slower climb. My sparring partners are starting to check in with me after practice: you doing okay? You having fun still? They're worried I'm going to get frustrated and just quit. CC warned me about this period: feels like learning nothing, but really a gestation period of a few months when suddenly it will all click. I notice that I feel this way, but am having fun anyway. Like I said, it's the one place I don't have to be in my head, the one place I have a dozen coaches helping me get good. Got a black eye from an errant elbow. Got so many bruises I look like a domestic violence victim. What I thought was a broken toe from a week ago's class turned out to be a slight dislocation or some other crack that is almost healed 9 days later. My toes are no longer black with bruises. A blue belt complimented me on my defense.
- Had a whole week back to pure joy. Sometimes, like in my last post, I make it sound like a lot of work. But the secret is that it's ridiculously easy when I just get clear I'm causing my own misery.
- Read the first three Harry Potter books in 36 hours. Had to stop because I didn't buy the last 4 yet.
- Saw Serra at MoMA. MoMA: a constant disappointment, with no more than 6 exhilarating works on display at any one time. But those works are worth a $20 admission. Note to self: the vertical art museum is a huge failure. The floorplates are never large enough. Better to be like the Met, or the Louvre: massive, sprawling, a country unto itself.
- I am still so in love. And, friends. I've finally learned how to be both of those at once. I said this long ago: this blog will end when the thrill of first time experiences is at an end.
